Do you agree that "the best things in life are free"? There must be some truth in it by looking at the tools that I've been using.

Here I would like to share with you some of the stuff that I've used and am recommended. Technically speaking most of them are "donationware" so please do chip in for the authors' great efforts.

Firefox Software, web browser http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all.html Having tried Internet Explorer, Chrome and Opera as well, this remains my favourite web browser which has no problem browsing over 90% of websites. The incompatible ones are taken care of by Internet Explorer. 
Spybot-S&D Software, anti-spyware http://www.safer-networking.org/en/spybotsd/index.html Doesn't update automatically, which can be a good thing as it doesn't have any hidden processes to slow your computer down... if you don't install the Resident TeaTimer, which is too annoying anyway 
VLC media player Software, media player http://www.videolan.org/vlc/features.php?cat=misc Simply the best multi-platform DVD player which comes with all the codecs we need
