It's been a while since I last updated this page and I'm afraid I don't have much time to keep this updated. Anyway I'll just leave the notes here and hope that someone will find something useful here.

QNAP TS-409U frequently disconnected from LAN

posted 9 Mar 2009, 07:52 by Aaron Leung   [ updated 3 Jun 2009, 17:09 by Aaron Leung ]

Setting up a QNAP TS-409U Turbo NAS on a suspected unstable LAN had costed me almost a week of sleepless nights. It got disconnected from the LAN frequently for unknown reasons. Had tried connecting the QNAP to several different LAN points on the network switch but the results were the same. Also had tried setting up the Windows workgroup on QNAP to match with another stable NAS on the network and it didn't work either.

The problem was eventually resolved but I did the last two things in one setting so wouldn't be able to tell which was the real fix. Probably a combination of both!

Well I don't think I would like to find out myself as the QNAP is working fine now. Perhaps some brave souls can try these one at a time and let me know the results. :)
  1. Swap the QNAP LAN point with another stable NAS's
  2. Setup ActiveDirectory settings on QNAP

Email body becomes attachment on Windows

When email clients on Windows receive emails with blank body and the actual body becomes an attachment, check whether the sender is using a Mac. If so, the problem is at the sender side. For Apple Mail users, just make sure these two options are checked:

amon.sys caused BSOD on Win XP

posted 27 Feb 2009, 18:11 by Aaron Leung   [ updated 27 Feb 2009, 19:12 by Aaron Leung ]

Attended this case where the Win XP machine restarted itself whenever booting up to the login screen. It booted ok in Safe mode though. That means it's most likely a software issue. So I turned off the automatically restart upon system failure option in XP and booted in normal mode again. Only then the BSOD occured and it showed that the culprit was amon.sys.

amon.sys is a component of the NOD32 antivirus software which was found on the client's computer. Some people said that the file can be removed safely and NOD32 would regenerate it. After the file was removed, surely the computer started up without the BSOD. But NOD32 generated unstoppable error messages when starting up so I had to uninstall it and install it again. Everything worked fine after that.
